about

“As Heard At Night” is the second piece from my EP, “Unconformities”, and is a bit darker and more reflective than the last one. The constant rising and falling of the instruments tumbling over one another evokes the same feelings in me as watching the ocean waves crash on the beach. The piece is centered around the beautiful playing of a truly wonderful string quartet and the inspiring drumming of Bobak Lotfipour.

“Unconformities”, was written and recorded during the collective pause and reset of the pandemic, which also coincided with the birth of my first child. An unconformity refers to a mysteriously missing layer of rock in deep geologic time— sometimes as many as a billion years of sedimentary deposits inexplicably removed from the ancient records. I wrote this music to reflect the strangeness, sadness and unexpected beauty of those years of the shutdown that seemed to exist outside the normal flow of time— those “lost” years; an unconformity within my own memory but one not without great meaning and importance.
