about

I’ve really been looking forward to releasing this new song— probably one of the most personal and cherished I’ve ever shared. "Portrait of a Boy" is a slowly building, emotionally rich and rewarding instrumental piece of music— reflective, hopeful and nostalgic. It was written in the first months after the birth of my son and sound of his voice is quietly present throughout the song. Piano features heavily, supported by a gorgeous string quartet and organic synth textures. Please enjoy, links to full song in bio.

It is another song from my EP “Unconformities”, written and recorded during the collective pause and reset of the pandemic, which also coincided with the birth of my first child. An unconformity refers to a mysteriously missing layer of rock in deep geologic time— sometimes as many as a billion years of sedimentary deposits inexplicably removed from the ancient records. I wrote this music to reflect the strangeness, sadness and unexpected beauty of those years of the shutdown that seemed to exist outside the normal flow of time— those “lost” years; an unconformity within my own memory but one not without great meaning and importance.
